Hong Kong Typhoons Ice Hockey

Skate-A-Thon

Hello Typhoons.  Thank you all for your participation in the Skate-A-Thon.  It is a necessary part of our fundraising, and it is a way for each member to help subsidize the costs of running the league.  We are now at 300 Typhoons members, plus we have over 50 players in our SoCO development program and another 50 of our players and other non-Typhoon players participating in our SuperLeague.

The fees that each player pays is a percentage of the actual cost of playing.  Our board works hard to gather up sponsors to help subsidize the cost per player.  We also rely on fund-raising events such as the Skate-A-Thon and our annual auction (later in 2010) to help cover the costs of playing, and to keep the initial player fees down to a minimum.  Unfortunately, Hong Kong does not have proper government-allotted sports facilities for ice sports.  We must play at shopping malls, and the rinks at shopping malls must make a profit to survive.  We are doing our best to find a way to develop the infrastructure here in HK so we can make hockey more affordable, but it is an uphill battle.

Please understand that all players, including those from other clubs who only play games with the Typhoons in the league, and don't practice with them, benefit from our sponsorship and subsidized rates.  The league is for all players in Hong Kong, so we need everyone to contribute in our fund-raising efforts to afford hosting the league.

We understand that it is not always easy to fund raise, but we believe that it was a better option than simply raising the fees at the start of the year.  We would also like to emphasize that we are non-profit, and we do our best to keep our costs down to a minimum, and we make use of volunteers whenever possible.  It is simply the cost of playing.

It is on that note that I would like to remind all of you that the set date for handing in the Skate-A-Thon contributions has come and passed.  If you have not yet handed in your cheque, or transferred the money, please do so as soon as possible.  Please do not wait until the next session to hand it to the manager during the games.

We are still waiting for almost 80 players who have not yet paid in their $1000 minimum contribution.  Please do so immediately as it is essential to the running of our program.
We will start handing out invoices for the minimum fund-raising contribution tomorrow.  Please kindly disregard the invoices if you have already sent in your money, and please kindly settle the amount if you have not yet done so.  If you would like to discuss anything in regards to this, please call me (Dwayne) at 9469 3484 or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
