Hong Kong Typhoons Ice Hockey

About Us

Mission  Statement

The HK Typhoons aim to promote and develop hockey in Hong Kong while providing a safe and fun league for children.  We strive to educate the public about the game and make it available to as many children as possible.  Our goal is to promote fitness, personal growth, sportsmanship, and life values into the children who play in our league.

History of the Typhoons

The Hong Kong Typhoons Ice Hockey Club is a non-profit organisation started in the mid 1980s by a group of parents, enthusiastic about the benefits that the sport of ice hockey could provide for their children. From a humble beginning of 20 to 25 children migrating to any available ice surface, the Club now has over 300 boys and girls aged 5 – 17 training and competing locally and in international tournaments. It is a mini United Nations on ice as many of the kids come from different parts of the world. We have youngsters from Japan, Korea, Canada, USA, UK, Europe, Scandinavia and of course Hong Kong and China.

Philosophy and Approach

  • Family Sport: Consistent with the Typhoon’s philosophy of involving the family, the Club is parent managed and operated.
  • Fun and Fitness: We believe that the sport of hockey should be enjoyable and improve the fitness level of the participants. Children are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle so they can contribute to their teams success.
  • Friendship and Personal Growth: Along with teaching the skills and knowledge of the game of ice hockey, friendship and personal growth are key pillars of the program. Some of our current players have been training with the Club for a number of years and are at an age to contribute as leaders. We encourage our teenage players to develop leadership abilities by helping to coach, officiate and administer.
  • Non-Contact: Hockey is certainly a physical sport, but in the spirit of keeping the game fun and competitive, all divisions are coached and refereed to ensure that body checking is restricted to incidental contact. Deliberate contact or hitting is not tolerated whatsoever.

Promoting Life Values

All parents do their best to prepare the players for the many challenges of life. We believe that training for ice hockey builds not only healthy bodies and keen minds, but also enhances character development. The competitive spirit plays to win, yet the confident character knows how to be gracious in defeat. The Typhoons experience helps youth to develop these enduring values. As the saying goes..,"all I need to know, I learned from hockey".

Program

League games are provided for all age groups on Sunday mornings and evenings, as well as some Monday evenings from September to April. We also hold regular professional skills training and coaching (skating, shooting, goaltending, hockey fundamentals) to Novice, Atoms & MiniSquirt, Squirt, Peewee, and Bantam ages on Monday and Tuesday evenings.  Players learn the fundamentals of the game, developing specific ice hockey skills and undergoing physical conditioning. Competition is introduced as a part of this training with league games. To further hone competitive skills and promote international friendship, the Club actively seeks out and participates in overseas tournaments. To date, we have competed in the Philippines, Beijing, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Novice (4 to 8 years old - beginners)

We have lessons for young players who are just starting hockey on Sunday mornings at Elements.  This division is solely for players who want to learn the game of hockey.  They will start at 9:15am on specified Sundays, and there will be a maximum of 15 players allowed on the ¼ ice provided.  Experienced players are not allowed. If players develop, they can be placed into their respective age division.  We will have coaches teaching them balance, edges, and how to skate and use the hockey stick.

This age group is currently run out the Rink at Elements Mall at Kowloon MTR station on selected Sunday mornings from 9:15am to 10:15am.
Atoms & Mini-Squirts (6 to 9 years old)

At this level, the Typhoons skills development program focuses on skating, passing and shooting skills. In addition, they are introduced to competitive hockey games. Training within the Club provides one level of development, but competitive games offer an important way to develop team work and game strategy. This allows the kids to experience competitive play as well as learn the rules of the game and the importance of teamwork.

This age group is currently run out of the Dragon Centre rink in Sham Shui Po on selected Sunday mornings from 6:45am-9:45am.

Squirts (10 to 11 years old)

At this level, skills development continues and the children gain competitive experience throughout the season by playing in the TYPHOONS SUNDAY NIGHT HOCKEY LEAGUE. This league takes place at The Rink in Elements Mall, Kowloon MTR station, and at Glacier Rink at Festival Walk mall located next to the Kowloon Tong MTR station.

We have separated this group into two divisions: A and AA.  SQA is for younger and less experienced players, while the SQAA division is for more advanced players.

Pee Wee (12 to 13 years old)

The players in this level continue with skills development and are introduced to team tactics and systems while playing in the TYPHOONS SUNDAY NIGHT HOCKEY LEAGUE.

At the Pee Wee level and above, we encourage players to join hockey camps and also play roller hockey to develop their skills. We have separated this division into PWA and PWAA divisions.  Like SQA, PWA is for less experienced players, or players that want to play recreationally.  The PWAA division is more competitive.

Bantams (14+ years old)

This is a more experienced group of players many of whom have grown up with the league. This is our oldest and most competitive division.

SuperLeague

We have a new division for players born between 1994 and 1998 who want to play competitive 5 on 5 hockey.  The games take place at Mega Ice at MegaBox in Kowloon Bay.  This division helps to prepare our players for international tournaments.
